Hi I specialise in alcohol and other drugs and gambling counselling. I have found that older women develop problem gambling out of loneliness. They frequent gambling venues for the company of other people and also report feeling safe in those environments. Stress is also another reason women gamble, and they describe using gambling as a way of "zoning out". An initial big win often is the catalyst for continuing to gamble. My experience with some younger women is using gambling as an escape from boredom or other stress factors such as coping with domestic violence. Some young women gamble when they use drugs such as crystal methamphetamine. Some young women try to win money to pay the bills.
